Gems from the Poets
Published in 1894 by Mast, Crowell & Kirkpatrick. Most of the illustrations in this book are amazingly detailed and romantic. Probably the most beautiful collection of engraved Victorian romantic borders for poetry I have seen in a low-priced publication. Many are floral borders, other include birds, butterfly and and bees. Line drawings typical of publications in the mid-late 1800's. I considered that the images in this book should be preserved. The engravings are from many artists, but there is no list of artists and illustrations in the book. Some of them are identifiable by their stile and their signature on the borders. Here is some of them: Hector Giacomelli, R. & E. Tailor, W. Hatherell, Allan Barraud, David Franz, C. Whimpet, M. Weber, H. Gray, W. A. Shade, W. HJ. Boot. Many signatures are not identifiable, many are missing. Starting from 1200dpi scans I cleaned and restored all the pages that were clear enough to give a good and sharp image and could be used as borders. While I have a very good copy of the first edition; in some of the pages the quality of the printing due to smearing of ink on low quality paper did not permit any work. Printed in any home inkjet or laser printer or by a professional printer, the images are clear and sharp and not pixels are visible due to the high resolution of the images (300dpi) and the high quality (no jpg compression artifacts). The use of good quality paper mate or gloss will give the best results.
The .DOC format.
For the first time we are introducing the .DOC format in one of our collections. The documents will open in your word processor (Microsoft© Word© 2000 and newer) with the images already set in the background and ready to type. To facilitate the work for many of our customers, we simply created new documents in Microsoft© Word 2000©, we inserted the 300dpi JPG images as backgrounds and we set the margins for a start. We also tested the files in Microsoft© Word© XP©, 2003 and 2007. The files will open in older versions of Word and other word processors that support the .DOC format but the images may not appear in the right place and may have to be recentered. Or simply create your document in your word processors using the instructions available online.
